Artificial intelligence is addressing the gender data gap in medical research, and researching women-specific health issues adequately. One of these research results is the detection system of breast cancer, which is widely observed in women.

The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute is currently developing the technology that has been successfully implemented in countries like America, China, and India for several years. This development includes the utilization of national data sets and information to enhance the effectiveness of the technology.

Early detection of breast cancer through the use of mammograms or breast X-rays enables the identification of the disease. Consequently, it plays a crucial role in reducing the mortality rate among women affected by breast cancer.

The technology serves as a resource for Ethiopia’s health system, which is based on early prevention of disease, in addition to paving the way for gender equality by establishing a better health care system for women.

According to the data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020, there are about 162,000 new cases of breast cancer in sub-Saharan African countries. According to the data, breast cancer accounts for 33% of the cancers that occur every year in our country, Ethiopia.
